The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) is highly dependent on imported diesel fuel for electricity generation. In order to provide the people with clean, reliable and affordable electricity, the government has set ambitious goals to achieve 50% energy efficiency improvement in households and 20% renewable energy generation by 2020. To help meet the goals, the Home Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Loan Program will provide at least 200 household applicants with free energy audits, and then provide loans for them to install energy efficient lighting and electric appliances, as well as rooftop solar panels to generate renewable electricity.
